The above figure is the subregion of the ordered matrix containing sequences derived from members of the Alteromonadaceae. The appearance of the area in the yellow box at right indicates that several strains of Alteromonas have been classified as Pseudoalteromonas and vice versa. In fact, the Alteromonas spp. were at one time correctly classified, but when the organisms were moved to the genus Pseudoalteromonas, the sequence annotation information was not updated. Subsequent classification of environmental isolates on the basis of SSU rRNA comparison propagated the error to new organisms.
